We’re not sure how many lessons entrepreneurs should be gleaning from fictional TV shows, but Dharmesh Shah of Hubspot says the AMC original show Mad Men, about a 60s era ad agency, inspired some thinking about startup culture.
The new season of Mad Men, which started Sunday, depicts the start of a new agency.
Lessons the show inspired include the startup lack of vacation policies (hey, we get that one); the 80 hour weeks, games, free beer and a “no door” policy.
We can relate to most of his comments, having been with four startups in the last decade. We’re not so sure about that working on the beach stuff, considering the ill effect sand has on digital equipment, but Shah says the free beer in the fridge hasn’t led to any problems.
He doesn’t mention that every startup could use a “Joan,” the smart, get-anything-done secretary on the show.
