DURHAM, NC – California-based Epocrates has bought Durham, NC-based developer of training and reference apps for iPhones and iPads for $13.8 million in cash.
Founded in 2006, Modality developed and sells apps such as drug reference tools for doctors and drug salesmen. Most of its 140 apps are targeted to medical professionals or students.
The company previously raised $2.5 million from angel backers.
Epocrates has registered with the SEC to launch an initial public offering of stock to raise up to $75 million.
Modality has 17 employees in Durham. It will remain based here as an office of Epocrates. The company will focus on apps for doctors and phase out its other products, such as CliffsNotes and Frommer’s apps.
“As a leader in providing technology solutions, we have a tremendous responsibility to amplify our development efforts that support clinicians’ daily workflow and meet their information needs,” said Rose Crane, chief executive officer for Epocrates. “We have the trust of more than one million healthcare professionals, and with Modality, a richer, advanced Apple development expertise. Together, we will cultivate even more cutting-edge and indispensable apps for clinicians that directly impact patient care.”
