DUBLIN, GA – German firm Mage Solar plans to locate its U.S. headquarters and first manufacturing facility in Dublin, GA. The firm says it will create 350 jobs over five years and invest $30 million in the facilities.
The company garnered almost $7 million in government incentives to spur the move.
The facility will include a training center and solar module manufacturing plant.
The company says Dublin’s strategic location, about half ways between one of the most well-connected airports in the world and the ever expanding Port of Savannah provides the solar company a logistic advantage.
The company also cited Georgia’s workforce training program Quick Start as well as its overall business-oriented climate as making Georgia an attractive state for locating corporate headquarters and manufacturing facilities. In addition, Georgia is also home to the Center of Excellence for Photovoltaics Research and Education at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Known for its groundbreaking research in clean, renewable energy sources, it is only one out of two centers of its kind nationwide.
The company expects to start production by the end of the year.

RALEIGH, NC – The e-NC Authority has launched a new Web-based survey to obtain direct input about broadband access and use across the state.
The design and size of this survey will provide businesses, organizations, decision-makers and citizens with the most comprehensive and accurate information on the status, uses and challenges of high-speed broadband in North Carolina.
More than 100,000 North Carolina businesses, nonprofits, health organizations, local governments and households will receive an e-mail message this week with a link for participation in the survey. The e-mail request to complete the survey will be transmitted to recipients by Strategic Networks Group on behalf of the e-NC Authority and its collaborators. The survey will be active until May 19.
Late last year, the e-NC Authority was awarded a grant of $2,023,874 from the U.S. Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to carry out an in-depth, multi-year broadband mapping and planning project for North Carolina.
All North Carolina businesses, organizations and households are encouraged to participate even if they did not receive an e-mail invitation. The survey can also be accessed through the e-NC Authority’s Web site, www.e-nc.org.

UPDATED RALEIGH, NC - Credit Suisse will manage North Carolina’s new $230 million Innovation Fund, NC State Treasurer Janet Cowell said Monday in Durham. Credit Suisse said it will invest at least 1 percent of its own money in deals. It will seek partners and syndicates for its investments from the fund.
Money from the fund will be invested in companies with primary operations in the state. Cowell said the fund will invest in high impact, high growth areas.
UNC System President Erskine Bowles said the investments may go to firms in nanotechnology, biotech, clean tech, IT, and financial services.
We think this is obviously good news for the NC startup community, but we wonder if early stage tech startups will be in line for any of the fund’s money, or if they will target later stage companies.
The major funding gap in North Carolina and the Southeast in general is in early stage investments. The recession hit many so-called “angel” investors hard, slashing their own wealth, making it harder for them to invest in startups.
Many venture capital firms moved away from the riskier early stage deals as well, preferring the safer later stage deals with companies that have already gained significant traction and revenue.
Since the Innovation Fund will be using state money, we suspect it will want to limit riskier deals.
Credit Suisse is in the process of expanding its Research Triangle Park facility from 300 employees to about 1,000. It increased its RTP holdings by 35 acres in November.
The North Carolina Retirement Systems is the 10th largest public pension fund in the United States.
The state set a high bar for applicants who wanted to mange the Innovation Fund. It required “broad private equity experience in multiple industries and multiple investment categories,” at least $15 billion of total assets under management and a history of working with at least 25 or more private companies with significant NC operations.”
