RESTON, VA – Internet users show a very high awareness of the Apple iPad and Amazon Kindle e-reader, according to a survey by digital measurement firm comScore.
In its survey, 65 percent showed awareness of those two devices, while between 58 percent and 69 percent of consumers conducted online research on the top five tablet and e-reader devices.
Amazon Kindle rated highest in terms of current device ownership at 6 percent of all Internet users, followed by Sony Reader at 4 percent. The iPad rated highest in terms of consumers seriously considering purchase over the next three months at 15 percent of Internet users, with the Kindle at 14 percent.
We were not particularly surprised to note that consumers considering an iPad purchase do not see it primarily as an e-reader. Only 37 percent said they were likely or very likely to read books on the device. Nearly half plan to use it to browse the Internet and check email, while more than a third said they would use it to listen to music.
This all bodes well for iPad app developers. Speaking of which, Amazon has unveiled a version of its Kindle e-book reader software application for the iPad. We applaud the cross-functionality of these devices.
We also hope competition keeps the prices of e-readers and tablet devices falling. We understand from reports that a new, much less expensive chip now on the market could bring the cost of the Kindle and other e-readers to as low as $150. Cost would certainly be a major factor in our deciding to buy either an iPad or a dedicated e-reader.

ATLANTA – Highwinds, a content, network and hosted IP services business, has blown in a $35 million debt financing led by Silicon Valley Bank. The company delivers live event streaming, on-demand video and large file downloads over its high-performance RollingThunder network to millions of global users daily.
Highwinds raised $55 million in venture backing from Alta Communications and General Catalyst Partners and an additional undisclosed investment from the European Founders Fund in 2008.
The company says it will use the proceeds of this recent financing to refinance existing debt and accelerate its growth.
Since 2002, Highwinds has developed content replication and delivery software and services. This led to a number of technology innovations in network management, distributed file system technology and advanced content routing methods.
The company’s high-performance RollingThunder network and StrikeTracker content management and reporting dashboard enable clients to deploy and manage content, file downloads and streaming media.
“With sustained growth, continued success in the market and a desire to have the flexibility to further expand our platform and network to bring valuable content to users around the world, we sought out a banking partner to help us achieve our business objectives,” said Steve Miller, president and CEO of Highwinds.

RESTON, VA – More than 30 percent of smartphone users logged onto social networking sites via a mobile browser in January, according to digital measurement firm comScore.
That’s a 22.5 percent gain from a year ago and represents 11.1 percent of all mobile users.
Mobile use of Facebook grew 112 percent during the year, while Twitter use soared an amazing 347 percent.
We get that. Twitter is easier to use on a mobile device than Facebook. But Facebook still draws more actual users.
The report says 25.1 million users went to Facebook via their mobile browser in January, while 4.7 million went to Twitter.
In response to the numbers, comScore’s senior VP for mobile, Mark Donovan said, “Social networking remains one of the… fastest-growing behaviors on both the PC-based Internet and the mobile Web.”

It will keep its Kahzam-branded online search and portal services as a subsidiary cornerstone of its Internet marketing group.

The company says Stephen Molinari, chair of ProMark, will become chair of the new entity.
Kahzam owns and delivers an integrated matrix of business and proprietary digital media resources.
We visited Kahzam’s main news portal and search engine site at Kahzam.com and found it clean, uncluttered and easy to use. It’s search engine has the same virtues, although we didn’t notice anything particularly special about its results for the topics we searched and compared to Google and Bing.
It also delivers related services including strategic corporate financial services which provides clients with access to capital and related financial support.
We did not see any financial details of the ProMark acquisition reported.
